The Chartered Institute of Fundraising offers free membership to small charities, helping them access valuable resources, training, and a supportive fundraising network.

At the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, we understand the importance of the role that small charities play in our civil society.

We also appreciate that by their very nature, small charities have limited resources and staff, challenges made ever greater by the cost of living crisis and fluctuations in giving trends.

We are here to help by offering charities with an annual voluntary income of £50,000 or less free organisational membership of the Chartered Institute.

Free CIOF membership for small charities: here's what you get

If you work in a small charity, you're probably used to doing a lot with very little. Fundraising without a big team, a training budget, or much time to spare is the everyday reality for many fundraisers, and it's not getting any easier.

We want to make learning and professional development easier to access, especially for fundraisers in small charities, which is why the Chartered Institute of Fundraising offers free organisational membership to eligible small charities.

It's our way of making sure that the size of your budget doesn't limit access to the support, resources, and community that every fundraising professional deserves.

Is your charity eligible?

If your charity has an annual voluntary income of £50,000 or less, you qualify for free organisational membership of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising.

There’s no catch – it’s our organisational membership and all the benefits that it brings – for you, for free.

What does membership actually give you?

Organisational membership means that every fundraiser in your team gets access to CIOF's full range of member benefits — not just the person who signs up. Here's what that looks like in practice:

  1. The Knowledge Hub
One of the most valuable benefits for small charity fundraisers is exclusive access to the Knowledge Hub: a library of on-demand video content covering the topics your team needs most. Everything is broken down into short modules (usually about 20 minutes for each module), so you can learn at your own pace without needing to block out a full day for training. The presenters are all experienced sector professionals, which means the content is practical and grounded in real fundraising work. For organisations where formal training budgets simply don't exist, the Knowledge Hub is a genuine and practical alternative.

  2. Networking and community
Fundraising can be an isolating job, especially in a small team. Membership includes access to peer-to-peer networking at member-only events, giving you the chance to connect with other fundraisers, share ideas, and find support from people who understand the work. We host quarterly networking sessions for fundraisers working in small charities and solo fundraisers, which will connect you to other people who understand the challenges and rewards of your role.

  3. Guidance and resources
Members get access to a wide library of practical resources, including expert articles, guides, templates, research, and infographics organised into themed collections. Whether you're working on your individual giving strategy, thinking about major donors for the first time, or trying to get to grips with fundraising regulation, there's something in the library to help. Plus, our Build-a-Brief tool will help when you need to create briefs for working with creative professionals.

  4. Webinars from fundraising experts
Member-only webinars run regularly, covering a range of topics to support your knowledge and keep you up to date with what's happening across the sector. If you can't always make it live, you can catch-up on-demand, or read an article that summarises the session.

  5. A collective voice for the profession
Small charities often feel like they're on the margins of the big policy conversations, but CIOF membership changes that. As a member organisation, you're part of a collective voice that shapes fundraising standards, lobbies on behalf of the profession, and works alongside regulators on code consultations. You also contribute to CIOF's growing giving agenda, which works to support charitable income generation right across the UK.

  6. Discounts and practical perks
Members receive discounts on Chartered Institute events, as well as exclusive offers from CIOF's corporate supporters. You'll also get a digital membership badge to add to your LinkedIn profile, website, and email signature which is a simple and effective way to demonstrate your organisation's commitment to professional, ethical fundraising.

  7. Keeping you informed
Regular email newsletters bring clear, reliable advice in a fast-changing digital world as well as the latest sector insight, research, news, and opportunities directly to your inbox — useful for staying informed without having to go looking.

Why it matters

We know that small charities are often where some of the most important work in the sector happens — and we know that limited resources can make it hard to invest in the kind of professional development that helps fundraisers do their jobs well and build sustainable careers.

Free membership is our commitment to changing that. When small charity fundraisers have access to the same quality of support, learning, and community as those in larger organisations, the whole sector benefits.
