Stewardship is one of the most difficult areas of fundraising to define and complex areas to deliver effectively and consistently across in an organisation.

Standard Content

Creating a supporter experience that is seamless and memorable involves almost every area of your organisation and takes empathy and vision to deliver it well. This course has been created to help you reflect on what it will take to put the supporter experience at the heart of what you do as a charity and prepare you for the leadership role needed to implement it.

Who should attend?

This course has been designed specifically for people who are leading on the supporter experience or supporter stewardship across their team, department or organisation. It will cater for all fundraising specialisms and help delegates to co-ordinate with wider organisational teams for success. You do not need to be in a senior role, but you should be seen by your team to be leading or championing stewardship.

Benefits for you and your organisation

Sector standards show that attracting new supporters to your work can be 10 times more expensive than keeping them, so not only does stewardship keep income higher it keeps the need for recruitment expenditure lower. The impact on your fundraising can be remarkable and yet with time and short term financial constraints we often de-prioritise standout experiences for our supporters. We worry about the cost, whether it is appropriate, find it hard to keep up with the many relationships we might manage and struggle to find the time to really think outside the box.

This course will take you through the financial argument for investing in stewardship, show you how it can be measured and help you to take a fresh look at the systems that may be helping or hindering you. It will also explore the importance of culture, how to influence behaviour and at the innovations happening across sectors.

Because advocacy and leadership is so crucial to shifting behaviours in an organisation, this course will also help you to explore your strengths and vulnerabilities to know how they play out in your leadership style and the impact they have on the stakeholders you need to engage. You will explore carefully selected leadership concepts from academics and practitioners alongside mindfulness exercises, practical action exercises and reflective journalling. This course is as much about you as it is about stewardship and the supporter because you are the catalyst for change. You will also have the opportunity to keep in touch with a great group of fundraisers across the sector who share your goals.

Topics covered
  • The importance and facilitation of stewardship in fundraising organisations
  • The development and implementation of a successful stewardship programme for your organisation
  • How to lead and bring others within your organisation on the stewardship journey
  • How to create internal buy-in for your stewardship programme
  • What other teams can do to support stewardship across the organisation
By the end of this course you will be able to
  • Advocate for the significance of stewardship for your fundraising and what it entails
  • Redefine stewardship for the new era of fundraising and lead the way in your organisation
  • Apply techniques from this course to lead on stewardship within your organisation
  • Develop systems for appropriate and consistent stewardship across your organisation
  • Identify roles people across your organisation can play in stewardship to elevate impact

We also offer other Stewardship courses, depending on the aspect of Stewardship you are interested in.
