As part of Volunteers’ Week, Lianne Ottewell shares how volunteering with the Chartered Institute of Fundraising helped build her confidence, strengthen fundraising skills, and create meaningful sector connections. From supporting the South West Committee to volunteering at Fundraising Convention, Lianne reflects on the importance of community, collaboration, and professional development in helping fundraisers thrive.
Lianne Ottewell: Global Legacy and In-Memory Manager | Animals Asia
I studied Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Plymouth University and there was an optional placement year and it was on this placement that I discovered the charity, Animals Asia. In 2015, I volunteered at their bear sanctuary in China for three months studying the bears and helping to look after them. Upon leaving, I knew in my heart that my dream job would be to work for this charity again in future. I graduated in 2016 and — in what still feels like a twist of fate — Animals Asia moved their fundraising office to Plymouth in early 2017. I was ecstatic to start working there as a Supporter Care Executive, and I have been there ever since.
I started fundraising from a really small age — taking on personal challenges or running bake sales at school. I think the feeling you get from making a difference and knowing that you've helped make the world a slightly better place, there really is nothing like it and I've always carried that with me. To be able to do it professionally and see the joy it brings, not just to beneficiaries but those donating too — it is a real privilege.
WHY I JOINED THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE
I joined the CIOF early on in my fundraising career as it seemed like a great resource to help develop my skills in a world that, at the time, was very new to me. It also helped me decide the fundraising path I wanted to go down as I learnt about the different aspects of fundraising there are.
"Membership of the Chartered Institute has helped me gain confidence in my fundraising skills and also meet so many amazing fellow fundraisers, which in turn has enriched me greatly."
The different opportunities that membership offers and exciting events such as Fundraising Convention really help to develop and hone your fundraising skills, which in turn make you a better and more confident fundraiser.
VOLUNTEERING WITH THE SOUTH WEST GROUP
I have been a member of the CIOF South West Committee since 2022, first joining as Bursary Lead and then becoming Co-Chair in 2024. I have also volunteered at Fundraising Convention.
What I get most from the experience is the wonderful feeling of creating a community for our fundraisers locally — especially in the South West where things can feel quite isolating. Being able to offer opportunities for fundraisers to come together, develop and learn new skills is a privilege. We have a wonderful team on the committee and the feeling of comradery as we have gradually developed the group has been fantastic.
I remember feeling quite shy when I first joined the Group, so to end up becoming Co-Chair has really built my confidence in a way I never would have imagined when I first joined. I no longer have the feeling of imposter syndrome that I had when I first started volunteering, and it's all thanks to the faith and trust my fellow committee members have had in me.
"I volunteer with the Chartered Institute because it feels terrific to be a part of a team that helps fundraisers in my local area become the best that they can be for their respective charities."
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, I would always say give it a try — what do you have to lose? You only stand to gain from an experience like this. It is an incredibly supportive community, and you should be able to find something that can work around your schedule, however busy you are — there are so many different opportunities available.
If you’re thinking of joining, you should definitely do it, especially if you are early on in your fundraising career and wondering what path to go down. There are so many different Groups offering insight and expertise and I have made so many meaningful connections in the sector.
