I've always been interested in working in the charity sector, but for years I didn't think I had the right qualifications. After working in fashion for over a decade, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Little did I know that this challenging experience would ultimately lead me to discover my true calling in fundraising.

Finding My Path Through Challenge

After finishing my treatment, I decided to go on a trek with CoppaFeel!, a breast cancer awareness charity. It was during this adventure, whilst hiking alongside the events manager, that everything clicked into place. I found myself asking her about her role – how she got her job and what she'd studied at university. Her answers opened my eyes to possibilities I hadn't previously considered.

Coming home from that trek, I felt inspired to make the leap into the charity sector. I applied to Charity Horizons for a role in challenge events, and they were absolutely brilliant. They coached me through my application and CV, even running through potential interview questions with me beforehand. I was lucky enough to get the job, and I haven't looked back since.

What Drives Me Every Day

What I love most about being a fundraiser is feeling like every little thing I'm doing is making a difference. I feel valued for the work I'm doing every day, knowing that I'm working towards a better future and a cure for primary bone cancer. There's something incredibly powerful about connecting people's desire to help with meaningful action that can change lives.

Discovering the Chartered Institute

I joined the Chartered Institute of Fundraising through my apprenticeship – the Corndel Fundraising Diploma Level 3. Through this programme, I gained membership, and it's been invaluable ever since. Membership of the Chartered Institute has helped me meet other fundraisers, learn the basics of fundraising, and grow my confidence in this new career path.

The Benefits That Make a Difference to Me

Being a member helps me in numerous ways: it supports my career development, helps me gain knowledge and insight, connects me with other fundraisers, and keeps me updated about the latest sector news. This isn't just beneficial for me personally – it directly impacts my charity and its beneficiaries too.

The newsletters keep me updated on the latest news in the industry, which I pass on to my charity. This ensures we're always informed about the latest changes to legislation and sector developments. In a rapidly evolving field like fundraising, staying current is absolutely essential.

What I value most about my membership is the access to membership areas, discounts on courses and conferences, the fundraising magazine, and the newsletter. These resources provide both practical value and ongoing professional development opportunities.

Learning That Transforms

My apprenticeship has given me confidence across all areas of fundraising. It provided a strong foundation of knowledge when I was new to the sector, as well as the skills to know where and how to find answers when I'm unsure. This has been particularly valuable as someone making a complete career change.

Professionally, the learning has given me a stronger understanding of fundraising and the wider charity sector, which I can apply directly in my role.

The Value of Investment

To anyone thinking of joining, I'd say it's definitely worth it! Membership doesn't just give you discounts on courses – you'll also save money across a range of benefits, so it quickly pays for itself. The financial benefits alone make it worthwhile, but the professional development opportunities are where the real value lies.

For those considering learning with the Chartered Institute, I'd say go for it! Learning with the Institute gives you practical knowledge you can apply straight away, builds your confidence, and connects you with others in the sector. It's a great investment in your personal and professional development.

A Foundation for Success

My journey from fashion to fundraising, facilitated by personal adversity and supported by the Chartered Institute, has shown me that it's never too late to find your true calling. The Chartered Institute didn't just provide me with the technical knowledge I needed – it gave me the confidence to believe I belonged in this sector and the tools to succeed.

Whether you're making a career change like I did, or starting fresh in fundraising, the Chartered Institute provides the foundation, community, and ongoing support that can transform not just your career, but your sense of purpose and impact in the world.
