I am currently the Innovation and Development Manager for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. I stepped into this role in April 2024, having spent six years with the charity in various communications and fundraising capacities. Additionally, I hold the position of vice chair of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising's West Midlands committee.
What I love most about being a professional fundraiser is the deep satisfaction that comes from providing exceptional stewardship to our supporters. There's nothing quite like ensuring their journey with us is fulfilling and making them aware of the profound impact their support has on our work. I thrive on creative thinking, collaborating across our organisation, and working with our diverse income streams to offer unique and meaningful supporter experiences that truly highlight the uniqueness of our cause.
In terms of my career, I recently started my first management position after being a regional fundraiser for almost five years. Joining the Chartered Institute of Fundraising was driven by my desire to connect with peers in the sector, learn best practices from other organisations, and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a fundraiser.
The most valuable aspect of my membership is the community of like-minded individuals it connects me with. The networks I've built and the support they offer have been invaluable. I frequently utilise the webinars and local in-person events with industry experts. I also look forward to the incredible Fundraising Magazine that arrives at my doorstep every month.
Day-to-day, my membership provides me with a sounding board in the form of my peers and access to a library of resources and guidance. This has not only enhanced my understanding of fundraising but also allowed me to deliver more valuable work for my charity. Volunteering at the annual Fundraising Convention, something I wouldn't otherwise be able to attend, has been an incredible opportunity made possible by my membership.
Being a member has significantly developed my fundraising career. It has expanded my knowledge and helped me appreciate the vast world I'm a part of, enabling me to identify where my skills are best placed. I've attended various events and training sessions, particularly the West Midlands events due to my committee involvement. These experiences have been amazing for getting to know local peers and building a network of like-minded individuals. Completing the Chartered Institute of Fundraising Diploma also boosted my confidence and deepened my sector knowledge.
As a member of the Chartered Institute West Midlands committee since May 2022, I've relished the opportunity to contribute to our local fundraising community. This role has allowed me to make friends, learn from best practices, and hear from industry experts, all while helping to create a welcoming environment for newcomers to fundraising.
Volunteering is incredibly important to me because being a fundraiser is more than just a job; it becomes part of who you are. The desire to go above and beyond is a natural fit with volunteering. For anyone considering joining, I would highly encourage them to get involved on a local level, whether virtually or in person, to fully understand the support available and explore the vast range of benefits that come with being a member.
