This five-module course will provide you, in your role of trustee, with all the information and guidance you need to recognise the principles of fundraising the range of fundraising activity, the role of fundraising in your charity, the legal and regulatory systems for fundraising and the specific responsibilities trustees have with respect to fundraising. It will also give you practical tools for gaining assurance on fundraising strategies and performance reporting.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed specifically for trustees - whether you are a new trustee and see the workshop a valuable part of your induction or an established trustee who wants a greater understanding, and up to date knowledge, of the fundraising issues that are relevant to the trustee role.

Format and time required

This is an ‘on-demand’ course so you can take part in it whenever suits you and your schedule. The five modules each begin with some preparation work for to do that relates either to a charity for which you are a trustee, another charity of your choice or one suggested by the course presenter. You will then be able to watch some video content with the key learning for that module. In some case you may be asked to pause viewing while you consider, for example, a question posed or reflect on the impact of the learning for your charity. There will be a final piece of personal work for you to complete to conclude the module.

You may choose to work through the course in one go, in which case you should allow around five hours to complete the whole programme. Alternatively, you can take part on a module-by-module basis.

Sam Rider

Biography:

Sam has over 25 years’ experience of leading both large and small fundraising teams for national, international and regional charities. Having worked as a Fundraising Director and CEO she has developed and delivered substantial growth strategies across all income streams from fundraising, retail, commissioning and social enterprises. She has fronted national appeals personally securing six figure gifts, set up new organisations, lead charity merges and held Trustee positions. Currently working as a consultant she is helping charities to develop organisational and fundraising strategies, delivering excellence in all areas of donor care and income generation. She is also a grants assessor, mentor and coach. Committed to improving fundraising practice and evidence based decision making, as well as being a course leader for CIOF, Sam also co-wrote the first UK Degree in Fundraising at Chichester University, the MA in Philanthropy at Kent University, has written a DSC Fundraising Series book and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Philanthropy and Marketing. Sam has also helped design the assessment process for fundraising apprenticeships and is a qualified end point assessor.
