In this blog, Paul Laird, Director of Operations at the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, introduces new cause-led networking sessions at Fundraising Convention 2026. Designed to bring fundraisers together around the causes they support, these sessions create space for open peer conversations, shared learning and practical insights to help fundraisers tackle common challenges and strengthen professional connections across the sector.
One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we hear about Fundraising Convention is this: the most valuable conversations often happen between sessions.
A shared insight over coffee. A candid exchange about what didn’t work. A moment of reassurance when someone realises they are not the only person facing a particular challenge.
Fundraising can sometimes feel siloed. While we share a common profession, the context in which we work varies widely. A fundraiser working in health may face different regulatory pressures from someone in the arts. An international development charity may navigate different ethical questions from a local community organisation. Yet across those differences, there are often striking similarities in the issues we grapple with.
That is why, at Fundraising Convention 2026, we are introducing cause-led networking sessions.
These sessions are designed to create structured space for peer connection — bringing together fundraisers who work on similar causes and care about similar issues. Participants will be able to self-select into groups aligned with their area of work, share experiences and practical learning, and, if relevant, move between groups where more than one cause reflects their role.
The aim is not formal presentation or polished case studies. It is conversation.
When fundraisers connect with peers who understand the context of their work, the discussion can move more quickly to what matters. Challenges can be explored openly. Ideas can be tested honestly. Practical solutions can be shared without the need for extensive explanation.
There is also reassurance in recognising shared experiences. Many fundraisers carry significant responsibility - for income, for relationships and for the causes they serve. Meeting others who face similar pressures can help reduce isolation and strengthen professional confidence.
Importantly, these sessions are intentionally light-touch in their facilitation. They are inclusive and flexible, designed to help conversations flow without constraining them. The structure provides a starting point; the value comes from participants themselves.
At its best, professional networking is not transactional. It is relational. It builds understanding, trust and ongoing peer support that extends beyond a single event.
Fundraising Convention has always been about more than content. It is about community.
By creating space for fundraisers to connect around the causes they care about most, we hope to support deeper conversations, stronger peer networks and a more connected profession — one where shared purpose leads not only to stronger income generation, but to stronger professional solidarity.
We look forward to welcoming you into those conversations.
